Alem holds a masters degree in Special Needs Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Addis Ababa, where she focused on disability inequality and gender disparity within the education sector and their impact on development in Ethiopia.

Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Aklile plans on continuing her work on womens rights by focusing on young children in order to reshape the future generation.
